Finding Balance in Rhythm: A TaKeTiNa Immersion

with Zorina Wolf & Deborah Masterson
December 2, 3, 4 2011

FRIDAY NIGHT INTRO OPEN TO PUBLIC 6:30 - 9:30 P.M. (Drop-In - Sliding Scale Option)

Isn’t it interesting how our basic assumptions of life allow us to keep balance in our day-to-day existence?
Suddenly, crisis occurs. The ground shifts beneath our feet and the path appears less clear. Our definition of ourself is called into question.

The TaKeTiNa rhythm process provides a powerful place in which to weather upheaval and change. In the shelter of this rhythm circle, we calm our minds by embracing the flow of stepping, clapping, and call-and-response singing. As we surrender, doubt and fear dissolve. Once again, we find our equilibrium: a new way of approaching life.

In this sophisticated world it is challenging to take the time to be a beginner. Defensively, we hide behind our masks, feeling deeply insecure about what we don't know, and often not even knowing we don't know.

Zorina (left) Deborah (right)What is this workshop all about? TaKeTiNa is a rhythmic group process for anyone interested in the transformation of his or her defenses. This rhythmically based practice can open us to the depths of awareness and non-linear consciousness that we find in meditation, yoga, or ecstatic dance, and the same conundrum: we cannot force ourselves into surrender. The circle becomes a reflection of how we act in life: pushing, pulling, or giving up and not trying at all. In a rhythm circle we are given a possibility to see how we struggle and the opportunity to let go. We can rediscover a brilliant, natural intelligence that we all possess and the grace to open to it.

Wear comfortable clothing, in layers to adjust to temperature differences (moving around vs. staying still). You can do the workshop barefoot, or wear comfortable indoor shoes if you feel you'll need foot or ankle support. If you plan to wear dance/movement shoes for the workshop, please bring them along and change from your outdoor shoes. A floor mat or blanket is optional, for lying on the floor at the end of each journey. No drums needed for this workshop. To learn more about VillageHeart Beat - TaKeTiNa Workshops.

Zorina Wolf: Zorina has been playing the drum for more than  20 years and teaching introductory classes in the Bay Area (and currently the NorthWest) in drum music for the last 17. She began drumming when she met and became the student of with her longtime mentor, the late Nigerian master drummer, Baba Olatunji. Zorina studied with Baba for 15 years. In 1996, Zorina met Reinhard Flatischler, the developer of the TaKeTiNa process. She saw the potential to take her rhythm training deeper. Zorina completed her three-year basic level TaKeTiNa training under Reinhard Flatischler in 2001 and in 2003, she completed her advanced level exam. She has also completed four other "post-certificate" trainings in TaKeTiNa.

Deborah Masterson: Deborah began her ongoing TaKeTiNa training in 1998, earning a basic teacher certificate in 2001. Deborah finds TaKeTiNa to be not only an outstanding tool for exploring her particular musical passions (Korean, Middle Eastern, and Afro-Cuban drumming), but also a critical key to gaining a deeper understanding of herself and her relationships to others. Deborah is based in Honolulu.
