Salsa Dance Intensive

A 4-Day Latin/Salsa Dance Retreat - March 18-21st, 2010

Join us for our first-ever Salsa Dance Intensive, running concurrently with Centrum's Latin Jazz Intensive, March 18-21, 2010.  Madrona is joining forces with the Century Ballroom in Seattle and Centrum (a Fort Worden collaborative partner) to bring together a great group of dance faculty who will help you expand your skills.

We will offer Salsa classes On1 and On2 for both intermediate and advanced dancers.  Roger Chen will teach On2 while the Century Ballroom instructors will teach On1.  Each day will start with a footwork and styling class for all levels.

There will be three intro classes offered over the weekend called “dancing outside the box” to expand your dance repertoire – we’ll be teaching West Coast Swing, Bachata and one still TBA. The weekend will include daily classes plus three nights of dancing, culminating on Saturday with a live band!  In addition to a variety of Salsa classes, there will be a special session led by the music faculty on hearing and understanding Latin rhythms.

Who are the faculty?

Roger Chen Roger Chen has been dancing Salsa since 1999, quickly mastering many different forms including Cuban style Rueda, On1 Salsa and now Mambo. Roger now works with a group of talented and passionate Mambo dancers and formed a group called the MamboHustlers. He teaches, choreographs and dances in Harbour Dance Studio in Vancouver.  Roger has made many appearances with MamboHustlers in the Northwest, including the Portland Salsa Festival and the Pacific National Exhibition, as well as being featured on Acento Latino Television and Shaw TV.

Faculty from the Century Ballroom (the largest school and nightclub for Salsa dance in the Pacific Northwest):

Hallie Kuperman Hallie Kuperman began partner dancing in 1993. Since 1997 she has been the sole owner and primary instructor of the Century Ballroom in Seattle WA. She began by teaching Lindy Hop and Swing dancing, and then moved onto Salsa; she also teaches West Coast Swing, Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha and Country Western Two-Step. Hallie has been a co-instructor for NW School’s Social Dance Program for the past four years and has been a guest teacher at numerous high schools and colleges throughout Seattle.

Alison Cockrill Alison Cockrill began formal dance training at age 4, and a professional performing career in 1987.  She received a full scholarship to Cornish College of the Arts where she graduated Magna Cum Laude.  Her studies began in ballet, expanded to modern and eventually encompassed tap, jazz and partner social dancing of all sorts.  She has been teaching Salsa, and other Latin dances at the Century Ballroom, since 1999.  Professional credits include international tours with The Pat Graney Company and various engagements (including “Star Search”) with choreographer Wade Madsen.

Deron Hayes Deron Hayes was introduced to social dance at age 14 while living in Munich, rediscovered her love for dance in college and hasn't looked back since. Deron has been an integral member of the Century Ballroom team since 2000, and has been teaching & performing Salsa as part of the Salsa Girls since 2003.  Besides dance, Deron's passions include martial arts, art, and getting to be a part of people's social dance journey.
